What a site quilt in our exhibition next month.

“The salty sea, an ancient land, Port Arthur, Salamanca, The wharves, Tall ships and rigging, gateway to the Antarctic, the museums and art galleries, Hobart at the epicentre – what a site”.

This is Kat’s artists statement for her “What a Site” quilt for the inaugural Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery Art Quilt Prize.  The quilt won Viewer’s Choice. It is a wall hanging 160 x 165 cm and features a range of techniques such as discharge dyeing and free motion quilting, and is based on a Google earth image of the museum site.

The quilt will be on display during Carnival of Flowers week as part of the Quilts, Stitches and Textiles Trail.  More information on our home page at www.koolkatquilting.com

A Year in My Garden

A Year in My Garden is another of Kat’s award-winning quilts which will be exhibited as part of the Quilts, Stitches and Textiles Trail during Carnival of Flowers week next month.  This wall-sized quit records the flora and fauna observed by Kat  over a 12 months period outside her studio at Blue Mountain Heights.  Extensive embroidery is a feature of this piece.

Gather Ye Rosebuds quilt

Next month during the annual Carnival of Flowers program Kat of KoolKat will be opening her studio and exhibiting her award-winning quilts.

The exhibition will be part of a Quilts, Stitches and Textiles Trail.

Kat’s signature quilt, Gather Ye Rosebuds, will be among those on display.  Originally designed as a Block of the Month, several versions of this quilt have won awards both here and overseas.

Kat first discovered the design in a book of stained glass window designs.  It had been simplified from a design by Alex Gascoyne in 1910.  The design came to life in a large window panel in a house in Sherwood, Brisbane.  After taking up quilting, Kat rediscovered the pattern and went through the process of converting it to a quilt design.   This was an exacting and time-consuming process, eventually requiring nearly 100 pages of pattern design, released in a 13 part pattern set.

The process was described in detail in an article in Australian Patchwork and Quilting magazine.
